Before: 1989 made postwar ushanka

After: m40 ushanka converted with artificial sheepskin

did you use a post-war Bulgarian ushanka for the sheepskin? Seems to be the newest conversion trick on the block.

I think (not 100% sure) this "was" a czech 1980's ushanka, funny thing is that it had a soviet star pinned to it when I bought it
It has grey faux fur like the postwar soviet models

Not 100% perfect but with the sheepskin it's MUCH better now

There is a way of cutting and dying the 80's issue Soviet ones to make a very good wartime variant... but the secret has been lost Sad

The Bulgarian postwar ones are the best off the shelf repros currently, they are at least the right shape and material.

The crappy ones sold on ebay are just gash, really nasty even as a piece of non-authentic headgear.

This looks ok'ish but the star needs replacing with an earlier one - thats a 80's plastic one.

Military surplus ushankas are OK, the bulgarians being the best choice as you mentioned
Modern civilian ushankas are usually quite crappy, and in general not suitable for GPW

I know, the star is provisional until I get a better one, I got also a metal pilotka star but seems too small for an ushanka
