ok, in a holiday i don't know what to do until i see a bunch of paper and used envelope

i start thinking of making something with it..and...
i see 9 rota dvd and....
a flare! yes, i'll made it!

what do you need?

1. a bunch of paper(a lot of it)
2. used brown envelope
3. a pen
4. metal cap from a medicine, syrup, etc
5. brush
6. red paint

how to make it?

1. bend a bunch of paper into a tube in size of a real flare, take a lot of paper so it will become a solid tube

2. glue it, so it won't let off

3. take the brown envelope, and cover the tube, glue it too.

4. take a gray paper cut it into size and glue it into the tube

5. write the marking

6. take a metal cap(you can get it from a medicine bottle)

7. take a brush and red paint

8. paint the tip of the cap, use brush so it will look rusty

it'll become like this

Very nicely done, thanks for sharing.

As an alternative to metal bottle cap one could use a screwin part of a light bulb and some putty.

My afgan rig will appreciate this!

Do you think you could pass on the length of the actual flare?

Many many many thanks Cheesy
Edit: never mind got it

The flare is approximately 10.5 inches long and 1.5 inches in diameter. The body is made of cardboard with a tin end-cap.

Great guide Smiley There are both 40mm and 30mm flares, the 40mm flares don't fit in most vests...

The 40mm one I used to own.. you can use it as references maybe:

Ok, here are some bits of intel you might find useful.

A) The caps on the flares have raised bits on them to ID the type of flare when in the dark. Chart is as follows:

1-4 are coloured as per the end caps, not sure what #5 says it is. If anyone can translate I would be grateful!

B) There are three sizes of normal flares; 30mm, 40mm and 50mm:

C) There is also this type of flare which is what fits into that funny pocket on one of the shoulder straps of the Soviet RD-54.

I have never seen one of these flares for sale before you ask  wink

This pic shows the flare I am talking about on the right, the left hand one is another shot of the 30mm flare and a bit of text about it:

Hope this intel is useful for you Comrades!

Comrades, your making it much more difficult than it has to be.

http://toolmonger.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/01/contractor-broom.jpg

alot of brooms, rakes, and mops have removable handles, like baove. i saw this thread, then quicly ran out side and grabbed an old push broom and un screwed the end. mine was 30mm same as the flare, it was old so i sawed down the end to the appropriate length. as for the end cap i took a cap from a "perier" bottle and sand blasted it (sanding would work too)  the male threaded part was slightly to long so i cut it to fit with a hack saw. i took some brown wax paper from the kitchen cut it to fit, wrote the markings on it with pencil, then took rubber cement and glued it around. after it dried i took a (not sure exactly what it is called) but its ment to burn wood to make dark black indents and you draw with it liek a pencil. i then went over my markings i did with pencil very carfully. and done. its hollow to a cetain point from the threaded part down so ill probably add the pull cord with a key ring and twine. ill get pictures soon.

comerades... the third type flare (the one with wire legs) is not a flare but a signal cartridge giving a very hot and bright flame. It was used for signal purposes but more often for cooking. Put under a mess tin made it boiling within some 15 seconds. It is called NSP (naziemnij signalnij patron) - ground signal cartridge.
And it is not designed to fit RD54 harness nor harness is designed to accomodate the signal cartridge. The pocket on the RD54 shoulder strap is for E-tool when paked upside down - when the pack is lowered and under the parachute.

Interesting! The same book those scans came out of show that NSP device in that pocket... have never seen it suggested that it was for the shovel handle... can't see how that would work anyway... but maybe its just me, I don't do string  wink

That book has a wealth of information in it, most of which I can barely understand  Sad
